Bates College is a leading liberal arts college and was founded in 1855. Bowdoin College, Brunswick

Bowdoin College was established in 1794 and offers a variety of courses including Majors in Visual Arts, Art History and Music. In the past decade the college has upgraded its art facilities with a $50 million cash injection. Faculty teachers include distinguished artists and courses include field trips to galleries, studios and museums in Maine, New York and Boston. The college is linked to the renowned Bowdoin College Museum of Art. Colby College is an independent college which offers 54 majors and 30 minors. It offers courses in Art History (from renaissance to contemporary art) and Studio Art. Majors are available in Art, Art History and Studio Art. The Art Department offers courses in various types of art including traditional fresco, figure painting, pottery and art restoration. Students can also intern in a museum, gallery or other art-related organization. The Colby College Museum of Art attached to the college is renowned for it permanent collection of artworks, particularly in American art. Heartwood College of Art, Kennebunk

About
American artists have always been drawn to Maine and it's sea and light. The Heartwood College of Art (HCA) is a popular college for the visual arts based in Kennebunk. HCA offers Associate (AA) and Bachelor Degrees (BFA) in: Design & Crafts (ceramics, weaving, jewelry and glass); Fine Art (painting, drawing and printmaking) and Photography. All students must complete an Art Foundations course which covers art history, drawing, anatomy, colour, 2D and 3D design, world crafts and history of photography. The college also offers a low residency Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Program.

Maine College of Art, Portland

About
Maine College of Art was established in 1882 and offered its first organized curriculum in 1911. It offers a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) degree with majors available in painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, illustration, metalsmithing & jewellery art, woodwork and furniture design, photography, new media, graphic design and liberal arts. The college offers a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Studio Arts, a fully accredited graduate program for emerging, mid-career and mature artists. The course provides lectures from visiting artists and curators and individual studio advisors. It culminates in a 7,500 word thesis and a group exhibition adjudicated by a panel of distinguished examiners. For those who would like to teach art, the college offers a 10-month post-baccalaureate program in Art Education. The course includes class based teaching as well as education theory, history and methodology.

The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF), Arts Department encompasses: Studio Arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, print, digital sound, video art, animation and combined media); Art History, Theory and Criticism. The University's on-campus art gallery schedules visiting artists and events each semester. Classes are offered in painting, sculpture, drawing, 2D digital animation, creative imaging, modern European art and new media.
