RECORD BREAKING
FINE ART |
RHA Gallagher GallerySituated close to St. Stephen's Green in central Dublin, the Gallagher Gallery was originally constructed as a replacement for the Royal Hibernian Academy of Art (RHA), when it was burnt down during the 1916 Easter Rising. Today, the Gallagher Gallery has been incorporated into the RHA complex at 15 Ely Place, which is itself regarded as one of the foremost locations for the display of contemporary visual art in Ireland. In 2001, the Gallagher Gallery hosted the 171st RHA Annual Exhibition, the pre-eminent showcase of painting and sculpture by established and emerging Irish artists. |

The Royal Hibernian Academy, which has just closed its doors (November 2007) pending a major rebuilding program, to add a new 9,000 sq ft studio complex and administration facility, actually has four galleries. Three (including the Gallagher Gallery) are situated on the first floor and host curated exhibitions of international and Irish artists. The Ashford Gallery on the ground floor supports artists who lack commercial representation in Dublin. Irish artists who have shown at the Ashford Gallery include: Nicky Hooper, Colin Martin, Cathy Callan, Samuel Walsh, Tom FitzGerald, Eoin O'Connor, Patricia Burns, Claire Carpenter and Douglas McKenzie, to name but a few. |
