Shaw Gallery The brainchild of art-collector Stephen Vaughan (28), one of Cork's most promising young entrepreneurs, The Shaw Gallery at 23 Washington Street is becoming the city's brightest gallery for talented young Irish artists. Open since May 2006, its success is due entirely to Vaughan's rapport with emerging artists and his colossal work rate. With 25 exhibitions under his belt, and growing contacts with top-class painters both here and in Europe, he is turning the Shaw Gallery into one of Cork's most interesting arts venues and a must-see for any serious collector looking for high quality Irish contemporary art. He also sources works by established artists, so if you're looking for that elusive painting by your favourite Irish master, give him a call. He's very approachable and he loves what he does. |

Intimate and Informal The gallery itself - conveniently located 200-300 yards from Patrick Street - is small enough to be intimate, large enough to hold a crowd. And it's bright and relaxed, with none of the oppressive formality you see in some of the more traditional venues. A great place to browse during the day, as I discovered. For artists, it's a great place to hold a solo show [note: half of the gallery's 25 exhibitions have been first solo shows for the artists concerned] and Vaughan says he may be expanding into Dublin, following the success of his recent shows in the capital. |
