Maclise Art Society

The Maclise Art Society is Cork's longest established and most prominent art society, and one of the most active artist-groups in Ireland today. Established over 25 years ago, by Vera Owens, Aideen McNamara, John Fogarty, Helen O'Canainn, and others, it is dedicated to the practice and appreciation of all types of painting (oils, watercolours, acrylics etc.), and membership is open to anyone with an interest in fine art, from leisure painters to professionals.

The Society honours the name of Corkman Daniel Maclise (1806-1870), the internationally famous historical painter renowned for his two monumental paintings on the walls of Westminster Palace in London: The Meeting of Wellington and Blucher, and The Death of Nelson (1858-64). Upon completion of these masterpieces, Maclise was offered the presidentship of the prestigious Royal Academy, which he declined due to ill-health.
The Crawford Gallery in Cork is holding a major exhibition of Maclise's works later this year, and holds some of his work in its permanent collection.
